"Little Peppy"

In 1977,Peppy San Badger, or Little Peppy as he was better known, was well known for his reputation for quick movements and a quicker mind when working cattle, spread like wildfire through the cutting horse business. In fact, the demand for a chance at those talents escalated his breeding fee, so mare owners needed a well-padded bank account to haul their mare to the court of Little Peppy.

The genes that Little Peppy dealt throughout those seventeen years created a kaleidoscope of offspring. The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) records 2,296 foals registered to the great stallion, and those offspring lived a variety of lives. Under saddle, some became the very essence for which King Ranch was famous, the true cowhorse working on ranches, separating calves during times of roundup.

Many of the Little Peppy offspring, though, more than a thousand, became competitors. They won in roping competitions and western pleasure classes; they excelled in reining and, naturally, in cutting. They carried youths to championships, fulfilled dreams for competitors, and aspired riders to strive to be better tomorrow than they were today.

It all started in 1977, almost twenty years before his return to King Ranch, when Peppy San Badger captured the hearts and became the idol of many a cowboy at the 1977 N.C.H.A. Futurity.

Still, Little Peppy offspring flourished. through them, the great stallion's ability to synchronize flying hooves to a cow's movement and to read that cow almost before it moved, remains today.
